Your first trip to the yarn aisle in a craft store can easily become overwhelming. So many options! You probably never knew there were so many types of yarn, weights, fibers and colors.
These stores are excellent for the casual crochet enthusiast. Each offers a basic selection of popular yarns and basic tools. That said, stores vary in quality and quantity. Some stores are well-organized and well-stocked while others aren’t. Shop at several different stores and find your favorite. It may not be the one closest to your home. Definitely get on the email newsletter lists for each store and download the apps. You’ll get a lot of coupons and alerts for upcoming sales and deals.

When I started crocheting a decade ago, Hobby Lobby featured a limited variety of yarn. Today the choices are robust for weight, texture and fiber. Most of their yarn is the “I Love This Yarn” house brand. The acrylic yarn is super soft and ideal for beginners. The color choices are overwhelming so have an idea of what you’re looking for before visiting.
Yarn goes on at 30% off every other week.
Deals on tools are less frequent and often house brand.
I Love This Yarn cotton is one of my favorites. Soft, color lasts through washing, and easy on the hands.

Always check the clearance and sale racks for some exceptional deals.
When I’ve ordered online the delivery seemed slow.
Fabric and seasonal decor are the mainstays of these stores so the yarn selection is usually limited but still worth exploring. It really depends on the store. Deals on tools are better than some other chains.
Carries national brands like Lion Brand, Red Heart, and Bernat.
House brand called Big Twist is not my favorite but for the price it’s great for newbies..

Tucked away in the back of most stores are the clearance items. Sometimes you will hit the jackpot when a particular yarn is discontinued.
The store inventory when I check online is often inaccurate when I get to the actual store.
Seasonal decor, floral, and paper crafts are the focus of these stores. Yarn is normally in the back of the store. The yarn isn’t in the most logical groupings and often isn’t well managed but again, each store is unique so check out a few.
Offers Yarnspiration brand yarn which is a great brand.
Limited selection of tools.
Can often find some unique and better quality yarns like cotton-bamboo blends.
Minimal finds on clearance.
Discount is normally a buy 2 and get the third skein at 50% off. This approach is annoying because you can’t quickly figure out the savings. Also the percentage off tends to be much lower.
Depending on where you live, Walmart can have a great craft section or one that gets minimal attention. If you're traveling and come across on in a small town, you'll likely find a good selection of yarn, tools, and other supplies. Check out Walmart closest to you and see what you think.
